HitzRadio.com has come a long way. The long history of HitzRadio.com traces back to the Winter of 1998, when
Nullsoft (the makers of the popular MP3 player, Winamp) developed this free but proprietary streaming MP3 technology,
SHOUTcast. Being an adventurous person he was (well kinda), the then 12-year-old
Sunny played around it and started operating a station known as
Various Hit Music Station. Back then, VHMS only operated for only 10 hours a day due to the limited resources he had. He was streaming from a 33.6K modem to a T3 shell from his ISP. It was an amateur radio show that played the hottest songs, a one-of-a-kind CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) station that played a mix of everything.
Lots of things happened after that in the Internet Radio industry, such as Nullsoft and Spinner being acquired by AOL, RadioSpy's failed attempt in Internet Radio with MP3Spy, Napster's controversial rise and fall, MP3 players debut, solutions directed at listening to Internet Radio stations in other ways such as Roku Soundbridge and Squeezebox hitting the market, etc, VHMS was up for a major change too. In the fall of 1999, VHMS started broadcasting 24/7 on a cable modem. While that still didn't support many listeners, it was sufficient for VHMS to start growing.
Later on, it seemed that a better and catchier name was needed, one that people will remember, and at the same time, it needs to fit with the station. Then, the name HitzRadio.com was thought of. On April 5, 2001, VHMS was officially re-launched as
HitzRadio.com with a brand new site and also a brand new format. Since then, the listener base continued to grow rapidly.
In April 2003,
Steve joined the team as the station's Program Director. By January 2006, Steve was promoted to General Manager and is working hard to help HitzRadio.com grow to something bigger and better.
By June 2004, HitzRadio.com has become the Internet's #1 Hit Music station and #2 overall according to SHOUTcast.
HitzRadio.com's target audience is both males and females, ages 18-30 from all over the world, mostly from North America. HitzRadio.com brings quality programming like the daily Top 7 @ 7, Weekly Top 20 Countdown, plus other shows that showcase both the CHR and Rhythmic formats of music.
